Repurposed Natural Fiber Clothing
I started Tatterworks 10 years ago from my love of sewing and the idea of sustainably reusing clothing to make colorful, fun, one of a kind pieces of wearable art. I shop at thrift shops and buy pre-loved items of wool, cotton, denim, linen, and vintage textiles such as tablecloths, quilts, and crocheted work.
I am a one woman show, making everything myself. I love the interplay between texture, color, and pattern which makes designing each piece a challenge but so much fun. You will see lots of patterns mixed together! I make coats, cardigans, tunics, ponchos, scarves and fingerless gloves. My new lines include tote bags, crossbody bags, and barrel jeans. All my items are one of a kind, colorful, and whimsical. I want my items to put a smile on your face, as well as those who see you.
A note of importance about upcycling in general:
Upcycling clothing is imperative because it helps reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry, which is one of the largest contributors to pollution and waste worldwide. By creatively reusing old garments instead of discarding them, upcycling conserves natural resources, reduces textile waste in landfills, and decreases the demand for new clothing production which often involves harmful chemicals, excessive water use, and carbon emissions. Additionally, upcycling encourages a more sustainable and mindful approach to fashion, promoting individuality and reducing reliance on fast fashion trends that fuel overconsumption.
