Heirloom Baskets from Vermont
I enjoy seeing the tangible results of my time and effort. Over the course of a day, I get to watch raw materials transform into rugged and beautiful containers with many uses. The joy of creating an object that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional satisfies my artistic nature and my traditional Vermont practicality at the same time. Making a living producing such objects is tremendously rewarding.
I have always loved the look and feel of old New England style baskets and it gives me great pleasure to be part of that tradition. I hope that my baskets will remind someone of picking berries with their grandparents, collecting eggs when they were young, or riding in their Father’s pack basket as a child. One of my goals is that my baskets will create some memories of their own. They are designed to withstand years of use and be passed proudly to the next generation.
My baskets are woven using rattan. I have found that rattan provides the strength, flexibility, weight, and aesthetic that my styles require. Some of the handles and bases are fashioned from oak or pine. I soak the rattan in my kitchen sink and weave the baskets. After they are dry, I sand the handles and stain the baskets to give them a warm and comfortable look.
